Explore El Yunque Rainforest

The only tropical rainforest in the U.S. National Forest System is a Puerto Rican treasure, and Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Beach Resort & Spa is its closest hotel, with an entrance just steps away. The breathtaking expanse of waterfalls, lush greenery, winding rivers and vibrant wildlife was sacred to the prehistoric Taino people as well, evident by their petroglyphs throughout. A staple of any visit to the island, La Mina is the most popular hiking trail for tours of El Yunque, right off Route 191.

Most Popular Hiking in Puerto Rico

As the largest piece of public land on the island, El Yunque draws more hikers annually (roughly 600,000) to its many waterfalls, thick foliage, and abundant petroglyphs than anywhere else.

Visitor’s Center

El Yunque’s central hub is the El Portal Rainforest Center, with a treetop walkway, trails, quaint restaurant, information desk, educational displays, a gift shop, and monthly arts and crafts. Educational staff members are also on hand to answer questions and provide a map of the forest.

  • Is El Yunque the only tropical rain forest in the U.S. National Forest System?

It is! It’s also the largest piece of dedicated public land in all of Puerto Rico, at 28,000 acres.
  • Where is a good place to stop and eat after hiking the trails?

Luquillo Kiosks is the place to go to fill up on culture and delicious home-cooked bites after a long hike. The group of roughly 60 local eateries is just a few miles east of the forest on Route 3.
